Although its creation may be even older if one considers the pigments used by Egyptian and Greek cultures, lipstick as we know it is celebrating its first century and remains a complex symbol of femininity.
Is there any woman who doesn't carry a lipstick in her purse? Perhaps, although it is undeniable that this item is a symbol of feminine beauty and an icon of popular culture. Lipstick is 100 years old and remains the best-selling makeup product, with nearly 1 billion units sold worldwide.
The history of lipstick may even be older if one considers the primary makeup of women in antiquity. In parts of Egypt, some natural pigments served as the basis for modern makeup. Waxes were fused to create certain colors that were used on eyes and mouth, but initially these were only allowed for the aristocratic social class. (Also read: What if women want to wear makeup?)
In Greece, women, however, painted their lips to indicate they were prostitutes, while in Rome, high-class ladies did it.
Ancient pharaohs and kings also wore makeup, although this was far from a matter of vanity. For them, makeup was related to warding off spirits and had medicinal properties. For example, they attributed properties to remove the evil eye or to represent the strength of their ancestors.
But the revolution would arrive in 1915 at the hands of the American manufacturer Maurice Levy. With the idea of facilitating application and eliminating the cumbersome process of needing a brush – which, paradoxically, is now back in fashion – Levy and other manufacturers thought the solution was a simpler and more hygienic presentation.
After many attempts, Levy created a balm in stick form, initially a bit unstable, but which later became the product we see today. In short, he devised a lipstick attached to a platform – which slid as the lipstick wore down – and which was inside a metal tube with a cap. This way, the stick became reusable.
Voilá, something so simple remains today the quintessential product and a complex symbol of femininity. Loved by most, but scrutinized by the most radical who label it an oppressive, sexist, provocative, and tremendously sexual object, lipstick nevertheless continues to thrive in the beauty market.
"Lipstick is perceived as a consumer item and personal grooming product accepted in an environment where modernity is desired and professional success predominates as a life goal (…) But we must not forget the primary function of makeup, which is to create a visual illusion.
It temporarily modifies the face and, therefore, the way its users present themselves to others," as described in a study by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru titled 'Lipstick: identity, presentation, and experiences of femininity.'
-Passion Red-
This research also suggests that certain colors accentuate these sexist practices. The color red on lips has always had an eminently sexual connotation.
"Elements that identify femininity may be underestimated, but they contain discourses and knowledge that tell us about what it means for society not only to be a woman, but to achieve a certain ideal image. The cosmetic industry plays with these symbolic values," the text indicates.
The combination of makeup and advertising has probably given rise to one of the strongest weapons of mass propagation of all time. From magazines, media, and now social networks, the ideal of perfection, fashion, trend, the ideal of being a woman, man, child, homosexual, is enhanced by constant presentations of models of that life.
Lipstick has played an important role in key moments in history. Besides also being an element for theater, for example, it was a product marketed by Elizabeth Arden during World War II in a campaign called "Makeup as Duty" to try to ease the tone of the crisis the world was experiencing.
